Reading Challenge 2020

It's time for something new!

This year I asked my friends for recommendations - and let me tell you, some of them are much out of my comfort zone! I'm going to read all of those books and I really hope I'll love at least some of them!

Ein Landaufenthalt von Onkel Titus by Johanna Spyri

I was bored to tears.  It's a story of a girl called Dora, whose father dies and she must live with her aunt and uncle. They are quite old, insensible and selfish and poor Dora almost dies under their care. Luckily for her, they need to go to Switzerland and Dora's life gets much better. The main problem I had with this book was Dora herself - she was so quiet, obedient and completely uninteresting! I'm sorry to say that, but I didn't care about her at all. The other children in the book were quite irritating, especially this boy who kept creating riddles, I forgot his name already, but I really wanted to throw something heavy at him once or twice. The ending seemed very false and unreal for me and I generally didn't enjoy this book much.  I can't recommend this book and I'm not going to read it ever again.

16 - a book your mom loves

This time the choice was very easy for me, because it's my mom who chose a book! Unfortunately, she chose the author of whom I'm not a huge fan, but - who knows, maybe I'll love this book? It's going to be: Trzymaj sie, Manka! by Malgorzata Kalicinska. We'll see. Wish me luck! :)

Immer derselbe Schnee und immer derselbe Onkel by Herta Muller

I'm so glad I decided to read this book! Not only was it engaging and really informative, but also so well-written, that reading it was a real treat. I especially liked the first part of the book, where the author wrote about her early life in Romania - by the way, after reading this book that country seems an extremely scary place I'd never want to visit. The second part, where she writes about other people, was less interesting for me and I did not enjoy it as much as the first part. I was afraid this book would be very sad and depressing - it was sad and scary and difficult to accept, but I couldn't stop reading it. I think Herta Muller is an extremely talented author and this book was fascinating.
